Strathearn Tennis Stars win Ulster Schools' title for 7th successive year

Strathearn Tennis Stars win Ulster Schools' title for 7th successive year

This year has been another successful one for the Strathearn Tennis teams.  The Senior A Tennis team, consisting of Jessica Leeman, Megan Chambers, Victoria Hamilton and Jessica Moore, were crowned Senior Cup Champions with this being 2 of the girls, Jessica Leeman and Megan's 7th successive Ulster Schools’ title.  Meaning they have won the cup every year since Form 1 which is no mean feat.  The other two are not far behind them, Victoria has won 6 and Jessica Moore has won 5. The girls eased to the final with wins against Down High and Grosvenor and then faced Sullivan in the final. A hard fought match saw the Strathearn girls emerge as victors.  Congratulations girls a fantastic display of tennis and a great way to end your school careers.

The Senior B team of Ellen Gilpin, Katrina Kerr, Katie Caldwell and Claire Whiteside had strong wins against Belfast Royal Academy and Wallace, but were unfortunately put out in the Quarter Final of the Plate after a tight match with Friends.

The Inter teams also had a successful year with the Inter B team of Grace Hutchinson, Emma Craig, Amber Hamilton, Olivia Knox and Elly Ryan reaching the final of the plate.  They played Victoria College in the final and it was a very tight match finishing 3 all, but Victoria won on games count by 1 game.

The Inter A team of Jemima Thomas, Emma McGugan, Sarah Craig and Sarah West, reached the Ulster Schools’ Cup Final where they played Methody.  The girls’ road to the final included convincing wins over Grosvenor, Belfast Royal Academy and Glenlola.  Methody were always going to be tough opposition but with two of our players unavailable due to DOE and Berlin, it made the fight even harder and on this occasion we also had to settle for runners-up.

The Junior B team of Sophie Thomas, Alice Sloan, Hannah Pollock Chan and Megan Allen reached the Quarter-final of the Junior Plate where they lost out after drawing our Junior A team in that round.

The Junior A team, which included Lucie McNaught, Kate Hunter, Lauren Mooney and Ellie Gordon reached the final of the Plate.  They faced Coleraine Grammar School and won the match 6 nil playing some excellent tennis in the process..

The Year 8 team of Sarah Mavitty, Sophie Johnston, Rhiannon Davies, Hannah Dadley-Young, Emily Wilson and Niamh Long made a promising start to their campaign with an early win against Bloomfield. Unfortunately the girls were put out by a strong Methody side in the Semi-final of the Plate.

Well done again to all our teams who have done so well this year but also to the many girls attending tennis club every week and developing their tennis.  We hope they continue to play over the summer months and next year.
