Strathearn pupil and Leading Cadet Sophie Dalzell, a Sea Cadet attached to Training Ship Broadsword at Dundonald, was appointed as Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants’ Cadet for the County Borough of Belfast. She will be amongst nine Lord Lieutenants’ Cadets selected across the Province, taking on a role which is largely ceremonial as they attend their respective Lord Lieutenants. In recognition of the award, each will wear a special insignia on her uniform throughout her year in office.
Sophie has worked through the Cadet Training Programme with dedication and commitment, and is described in her award citation as ‘an intelligent and inspiring Cadet who not only strives to take on new skills, but also uses her knowledge to help those younger than her. She is a patient and respected peer leader who takes time working with others, helping them to achieve their own personal goals.’
Sophie’s cadet career encompasses 25 qualifications including Adventure Training, First Aid, Marine Engineering and a host of recognised Royal Yachting Association qualifications. She has achieved more than 120 training days over a twelve month period and continuously demonstrates a passion and drive to succeed. In addition, she is a keen and talented musician, playing piano and percussion with her school band and orchestra and she is also a prolific charity fundraiser.
Her citation concludes, ‘Leading Cadet Dalzell is a reliable and dedicated cadet whose maturity allows her to become an excellent role model and ambassador for the Sea Cadets, with outstanding dress and bearing. The core values of commitment, loyalty, discipline, honesty and teamwork are instilled in Sophie’s personal morals.’
