Obituary: Mrs Gillian Kinkead 5/3/1928 - 26/5/2018
On 5th March 1928 Gillian Hamill was born in the city of Shanghai, on China’s central coast as her father held the post of Harbourmaster in Shanghai. Gillian and her sister Deidre were removed to New Zealand for their education. After the war, they returned to Shanghai but the subsequent Communist ethic was not a good prospect for the family and so they travelled to Dublin where Gillian furthered her education by reading Philosophy with History at Trinity College Dublin. This enabled her to teach at Strathearn Girls’ School for almost thirty-five years. It was during her early years as history teacher at Strathearn that she met and married Robin Kinkead. She worked tirelessly as Head of History and other prominent roles in the school with the 6th form, uniform and the house system all marshalled effectively for the hundreds of pupils who passed through Strathearn under her direction and care. Anyone attending school from the 1950s up to her retirement in 1984 will without doubt remember her care and attention to detail. In recent years both Mrs Kinkead and her husband have been residents in Belmont Care Home. As a school community we know that many Old Girls and ex staff of the school will wish us on their behalf to extend our sympathies husband Robin, sister Deirdre, along with the family circle in England. A service celebrating her life was held recently at Belmont Presbyterian Church.
