HRH the Earl of Wessex was at Strathearn on Wednesday 25 February 2015 to officially open the new school as part of a visit to Northern Ireland.
Prince Edward had visited the school exactly 22 years ago, to the day, when in 1993 he opened a new sports hall. The whole school population gathered outside and spontaneously cheered at his arrival. Later Prince Edward jokingly apologised for not creating the excitement he had 22 years ago, when he arrived by helicopter!
The Prince received a tour of the £18m new build, which included science classrooms, sporting facilities, technology suite and library, and was treated to a performance by the School's Chamber choir, currently preparing for the televised semifinal of the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year competition. He completed the visit by unveiling a plaque to officially open the new school building.
It was a great day for the school and the presence of Prince Edward, his warmth, interest and availability to meet so many pupils, made it quite unforgettable.
Pictures are now available in the galleries and a video of the event available through this link.
On Saturday 25 February our celebrations were complete when over 600 people, including former staff and pupils, came along for Strathearn Open House. Our visitors were able to view the extensive and wonderful facilities the school now enjoys, reminisce about the ‘goings-on’ in the old school and enjoy the warmth of welcome which is Strathearn.
Thank you to all who came along and supported a most delightful morning.
